LAKE CHARLES, La. – Southern Miss women's soccer suffered its first loss of the season Sunday, falling 1-0 to McNeese at Cowgirl Field. Sumayah Brown's goal at 34' proved to be the difference in a tightly contested match.
Brown scored unassisted in the first half, striking from the right to give the Cowgirls the early lead. McNeese's defense stood strong the rest of the way to preserve the shutout despite Southern Miss' offensive pressure.
The Golden Eagles dominated in shot volume, putting 13 shots on frame compared to McNeese's 12, but registered only four shots on goal. Southern Miss created multiple chances throughout, recording 10 corner kicks over 90 minutes, but couldn't find the finishing touch when it mattered.
Logan McGruder made five saves in goal for Southern Miss, keeping the Golden Eagles within reach all match. McNeese's goalkeeper rotation of Celeste Marijnissen and Shannon Dempsey combined for four saves to secure the shutout. Ryan Smith earned a yellow card for Southern Miss in the 82nd minute.
The loss ended Southern Miss' undefeated start following last week's 4-0 victory over Alabama State. Despite the shot advantage, the early McNeese goal proved decisive.
