BARTLESVILLE, Okla. -- The Southern Miss women's golf team used a record-breaking third round to claim The Lady Clerico team championship on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Eagles gave head coach and Oklahoma native Colton Cowan his fourth victory dating back to last season.Â
"I am proud of how our girls fought this week," Cowan said. "We really made a statement this week about fighting together as one, which is a weird concept in golf, but it's just constantly being reminded that we are in this together through the highs and lows. It allows us to ride momentum and continue fighting when things get tough. As far as today goes, I am really proud of them going out and truly winning the golf tournament. A lot of times you can see teams playing not to lose, or they truly go out there playing their best, and that's exactly what we did. We left no doubt, and we went out there and earned it."
Returners Louise Cuyvers and Taylor Trible anchored the comeback win as Southern Miss jumped Abilene Christian, thanks to a program-best 279 today. Cuyvers and Trible both fired a five-under 67, which is tied for the fourth-lowest single-round score in school history. The two combined for 13 birdies, while seven of them came from Cuyvers.Â
The Golden Eagles then got a four-under 68 from Savannah Van Gaalen, who shot up to seventh place with her final round. Van Gaalen had a trio of birdies on the front and back nine to set her new career low. Liv Romer added a five-over 77 to slide to a tie for 28th. Morgan Guepet shot an 11-over 83 and finished in 48th.Â
Southern Miss trailed Abilene Christian by one stroke heading into Tuesday's final round and ended up winning the event by 11 strokes after going nine-under par as a team. Abilene Christian, Northern Colorado, Houston Christian and UTRGV rounded out the top five. Ryann Honea of Abilene Christian won the individual title by five strokes as Northern Colorado's Timbre Shehee held off three different golfers for second place. Cuyvers was one of those three, as the sophomore finished in third after going five-under for the tournament. Trible slid up five spots for a sixth-place finish after shooting four-under par over 54 holes.
The Golden Eagles now have a brief break before traveling to Iowa City, Iowa, for the Hawkeye Invitational, slated for Sept. 29-30. The two-day event will be held at Finkbine Golf Course, and marks the second consecutive season at the event.Â
