The Golden Eagles enter league play with momentum after securing their first win of the 2025 campaign, a 1-0 home shutout of Louisiana Tech. Junior Ryan Smith continued her red-hot form, scoring her third goal of the season in the 11th minute off an assist from freshman Lorilee Taylor, before the defense clamped down to secure the result. Goalkeeper Maddie Ellis anchored the back line with 88 minutes of composed play, while Lena Blake came on late to help close out the clean sheet. The performance marked USM's first shutout of the year and highlighted a growing balance between an improving attack and a disciplined defensive unit.
Smith leads the Golden Eagles with three goals in her last three matches, becoming the focal point of the offense. Alongside her, attackers Raquelle Mitchell, Rhyleigh Marks, and Taylor have generated steady pressure, while midfielders Shaelynn Quick and Chloe Taylor continue to provide box-to-box presence. Defensively, the Golden Eagles have tightened up, allowing just one goal in their last two matches after a difficult opening stretch.
Georgia State counters with one of the more dangerous offenses in the Sun Belt. The Panthers come into Sunday at 4-3-1, including a signature 2-1 win at Florida earlier this month and a 1-1 draw at Wofford in their most recent outing. GSU has scored 18 goals with 17 assists through eight matches, averaging over 16 shots per game. The attack is balanced and deep with the unit all capable of changing a game. Defensively, the Panthers have posted a 1.25 goals-against average, with the back line and goalkeepers combining for 38 saves and a strong 3-1 home record at the GSU Soccer Complex.
The Panthers hold the edge in the series, but the Golden Eagles claimed a memorable 2-1 win in 2023. With both teams looking to start conference play on the right foot, Sunday's match promises to be an early test of depth, discipline, and attacking firepower.
