Golden Eagles Find First Goal in Road Match

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss Soccer (0-5-0, 0-0-0 SBC) dropped a 5-1 decision on the road to UAB (2-2-1, 0-0-0 American) Sunday evening at PNC Field, but the Golden Eagles recorded a milestone moment with their first goal of the 2025 season.
Midfielder Ryan Smith delivered the breakthrough, calmly converting a penalty kick in the 52nd minute to put Southern Miss on the board and spark energy for the visitors. The goal marked not only Smith's first of the season but also a confidence boost for the Golden Eagles as they continue to generate offensive opportunities.
Southern Miss tallied 10 shots, including three on frame, and earned a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks while holding nearly even possession throughout the contest. Freshman forward Lorilee Taylor and junior striker Raquelle Mitchell led the attacking push with multiple looks on goal, while goalkeeper Maddie Ellis collected two saves in the opening half before Grace O'Shaughnessy came on to make two stops of her own.
Despite the scoreline, the Golden Eagles showed improved composure in possession and resilience in the attack, highlighted by Smith's penalty finish and a late push that produced several dangerous chances.
