The Golden Eagles (0-2-0) are coming off a close 1-0 loss to Southern, where they controlled the run of play and outshot the Jaguars 16-3. Freshman forward Zayla Reagan led the way with five shots, while Rhyleigh Marks and Chloe Taylor added late chances on goal. After a tough opener at Memphis, Southern Miss responded with a much stronger showing in Baton Rouge and will look to carry that momentum into Thursday night.
Auburn (0-1-1) is still looking for its first win of the season after a 1-0 loss to Louisville and a 0-0 draw against Samford. The Tigers have fired 23 shots through two matches and return several key players from last year's SEC squad, including leading scorer Olivia Woodson and playmaker Anna Haddock. Auburn has also added a few high-level transfers, giving them extra firepower on both ends of the field.
Southern Miss will lean on its mix of veteran leadership and young talent in this one. Seniors Mallory Tapper and Taylor Stewart have been rock-solid in the back, while young forwards like Zayla Reagan, Rhyleigh Marks, and Lorilee Taylor have brought energy and confidence to the attack. Junior goalkeeper Lena Blake earned her first start of the season last time out and will look to build on that performance against an SEC opponent.
This is the first meeting between the two teams since last season, and it's a big stage for the Golden Eagles to show what they're building. With a nationally streamed matchup and a chance to bounce back, Thursday night's match is another step forward for a Southern Miss squad finding its rhythm.
