HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss right-handed pitcher Michael Fowler (Trussville, Ala.) recently signed a free-agent deal with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Fowler was signed by the organization after spending time this summer with the Mississippi Mud Monsters in which he appeared in seven games posting a 2-1 record with a 1.93 earned run average. He threw 9 1/3 innings and fanned 15 with one walk while allowing four hits and a pair of runs.
He spent his final collegiate season in Hattiesburg this past spring, after playing for both LSU and Tulane, and appeared in 10 games as a Golden Eagle with no record and a 9.39 ERA. In 7 2/3 innings, he fanned nine and walked eight. His longest stint for Southern Miss was a two-inning performance in which he fanned a season-high four and walked one, while not allowing a run or a hit in the outing against South Alabama.
He is the fifth Golden Eagle from this past season's squad to sign a professional contract.
JB Middleton (2nd round, Colorado Rockies), Jake Cook (3rd round, Toronto Blue Jays), Nick Monistere (4th round, Houston Astros) and Landen Payne (18th round, Chicago White Sox) all signed to play professionally after being taken in the MLB Draft last month.
Fowler has not been assigned to a Brewers farm club at this time.
