Hattiesburg Regional All-Tournament Team Announced
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – No. 16 national seed Southern Miss tried to rally late from a four-run deficit but fell to No. 3 seed Miami 5-4 in the NCAA Hattiesburg Regional Monday evening at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (47-16) saw their season end with the loss, while the Hurricanes (34-25) now advance to face Louisville in the Super Regionals this weekend.
Down 5-1 heading into the seventh inning stretch, the Golden Eagles scratched for one run back in the frame. After Matthew Russo was hit by a pitch to begin things, he was erased on a fielder's choice by Joey Urban. After getting moved up a base on a groundout, Urban scored on a Tucker Stockman single to center.
The Golden Eagles then tried to rally again in the ninth. After a strikeout, Ben Higdon walked. Carson Paetow – in his final at bat as a Golden Eagle – followed another out with a home run off the scoreboard in left center. Seth Smith then flew out to left to end the contest. The home run was Paetow's 16th of the season and the 47th of his career as he finished fifth in school history in home runs.
Matt Adams, who returned to start on the mound for the Golden Eagles after only two days' rest, pitched valiantly in his final game of his six-year career. Adams, who allowed three runs on four hits with a walk and nine strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings, kept the Hurricanes off the board until a second-inning solo home run by Dorian Gonzalez, who registered his 11th of the year.
Southern Miss tied the score in the fourth. Ozzie Pratt collected a one-out singled to left and moved up 90 feet on a Nick Monistere walk. Russo followed with a single to score Pratt.
With the score tied at 1-1 after four innings, Adams fanned the first two batters to start the fifth before giving up a single to Michael Torres and a RBI double by Jake Ogden. The Golden Eagles then went to the pen for Josh Och, who allowed a run-scoring single by Max Galvin before getting out of the inning.
Dorian Gonzalez, Jr., opened the sixth with a homer and Torres added a run-scoring single later in the frame to complete the Hurricanes' scoring.
Will Smith, who entered the game for UM in the fourth, improved to 3-0 with the win by handcuffing the Golden Eagles with just a run on a hit over three innings with four strikeouts. Brian Walters threw the final two innings and collected his 10th save of the campaign.
Adams suffered the loss and fell to 6-4.
