HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss starting pitcher JB Middleton (Yazoo City, Miss.) along with second baseman Nick Monistere (Brandon, Miss.) earned first team All-America honors, while reliever Colby Allen (Louisville, Miss.) collected a third team accolade in an announcement by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Wednesday afternoon.
It marks only the third time that three Golden Eagles were honored among the organization's yearly three All-America teams. The other years came in 2004 (Austin Tubb, RP, 1st; Jarrett Hoffpauir, 2B, 1st; Ryan Frith, OF, 2nd) and in 2018 (Nick Sandlin, SP, 1st; Luke Reynolds, 3B, 2nd; Matt Wallner, OF, 3rd).
Middleton finished his first season as a Golden Eagle starter with a 10-1 record and a 2.31 ERA. He also fanned 122 and walked just 25 in 105 1/3 innings during the year, while only allowing 65 hits. The junior currently ranks No. 2 in WHIP (0.85), fifth in hits allowed per nine innings (5.55), sixth in strikeouts, ninth in wins and 10th in ERA nationally. Heading into this July's MLB First-Year Player Draft, Middleton holds the distinction of being the No. 34 prospect.
As for Monistere, the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, the junior completed his junior campaign with a .323 average with 21 home runs and 72 RBI, leading both his team and Sun Belt Conference. His season home run total ties him for ninth on the school chart and his RBI total is the most by a Golden Eagle in a season since Reed Trimble collected that many during the 2021 campaign. He also ranks No. 13 nationally in total home runs.
Allen, a junior right-handed reliever, appeared in 29 games with two starts and posted a 7-4 record with 12 saves and a 3.63 ERA. Those numbers included 77 strikeouts and only 17 walks in 67 innings of work. His save total ranks No. 10 nationally, while his total appearances are No. 18 in the country. His season save total also is tied for fifth best at the school, while his 19 career saves hold a No. 7 ranking at Southern Miss.
NCBWA membership includes writers, broadcasters and publicists. Designed to promote and publicize college baseball, it is the sport's only college media-related organization, founded in 1962.
