TROY, Ala. – Joey Urban drove in three runs and Matthew Russo collected a career-high four hits as No. 19 Southern Miss captured an 8-5 Saturday victory over No. 20 Troy at Riddle-Pace Field to complete a three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep.
The victory was a school-record tying 15th consecutive win for the Golden Eagles, who finished the regular season with a 41-13 overall mark and 24-6 in the Sun Belt. Southern Miss now holds a No. 2 seed in next week's Sun Belt Conference Tournament slated for Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Ala. The Golden Eagles will play versus an as of yet named opponent at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 21.
The sweep over the Trojans (37-19, 18-12) was the fourth consecutive Sun Belt sweep for Southern Miss, marking the first time they have accomplished that feat since doing it against Middle Tennessee, Florida Atlantic, UAB and UTSA in 2017 when they were members of Conference USA.
Russo collected four of the Golden Eagles' 14 hits as he scored twice and drove a run.
Urban gave the Golden Eagles the lead in the first inning. Russo and Carson Paetow each singled before Urban doubled off the right field wall to score both runners and give the visitors a 2-0 advantage.
The Golden Eagles doubled the lead in the next frame as Tucker Stockman recorded the first of two hits, a single and then went to third on a double by Jake Cook. Nick Monistere then singled both runners home with a ball through the left side.
Stockman got his second hit, another single, in the fifth, driving home Urban who opened the stanza with a single of his own to make the score 5-0.
Troy got two runs back in the fifth on a Brooks Bryan two-run double, before the Golden Eagles finished their scoring in the sixth with three more runs coming on a RBI single from Russo, followed by run-scoring groundouts from both Urban and Ben Higdon.
With Southern Miss up 8-2, the Trojans added two more runs in the sixth on a solo home run from Sean Darnell, his sixth, and a bases-loaded hit by pitch to cut the deficit to four. They then added another run in the eighth on Stephen Meier's homer, his seventh of the year.
The pitching on the backend for the Golden Eagles, though, came up big again as Landen Payne threw 2 2/3 innings and allowed a run on two hits with a walk and five strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 2-0. Colby Allen then had a five-pitch ninth to retire the side and get his 11th save.
Troy starter Jay Dill recorded the loss after giving up four runs on eight hits with a walk and four strikeouts over three-plus innings to fall to 4-2.
