TROY, Ala. – Nick Monistere and Matthew Russo each drove in three runs to lead No. 19 Southern Miss to a 12-1, eight inning run-rule victory over No. 22 Troy Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field.
The Golden Eagles (40-13 overall, 23-6 Sun Belt) clinched the No. 2 seed in next week's Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Montgomery, Ala., by winning their 14-straight game. The win also gave the Golden Eagles their 40th-victory, marking the ninth-straight year with at least 40 wins – which ranks as the current top streak in Division I baseball. Southern Miss also reached the 40-win mark during the regular season for the fifth time in school history with the others coming in 2003, 2004, 2017 and 2022.
Ozzie Pratt led the 12-hit attack with three.
The visitors took the lead on a two-run home run by Monistere in the first, his team-leading 18th, and then extended it to 4-0 in the second as Drey Barrett belted his ninth homer, a solo shot, and Russo provided a bases-loaded walk.
The Trojans (37-18, 18-11) collected their only run in the fourth against starter Matt Adams, who threw 3 1/3 innings and gave up three hits and three walks to go along with three strikeouts. After a leadoff walk and a run-scoring double by Brooks Bryan, Troy loaded the bases with a walk and a single. Adams was then replaced by Kros Sivley who got out of the inning with a ground-ball double play.
Over the next two innings, Troy got two runners on in each frame, but the Golden Eagles worked their way out of trouble as Sivley got a strikeout to end the fifth and followed with another double play groundout to end the sixth.
Sivley kept the Trojans off the board over the final 4 2/3 innings as he allowed one hit and two walks with three hit batters and five strikeouts to get the win and improve to 6-1.
Southern Miss added to its lead with solo runs in consecutive innings as Ben Higdon drove in the first run with a single in the fifth, while Monistere added a run-scoring double in the sixth.
The Golden Eagles then put the game out of reach by scoring six times in the eighth.
After a dropped infield popup hit by the leadoff hitter Barrett, Pratt singled. After an out, Monistere was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Russo added to the lead with a two-run single, before Carson Paetow knocked in two more runs with a triple off the top of the wall in right. Higdon then added a sacrifice fly before Barrett finished the scoring with a long single off the wall in short right field.
Troy starter Noah Edders (5-2) suffered the loss by allowing three runs on three hits over one-plus innings with two walks and no strikeouts.
It marked the first weekend series loss for the Trojans all season.
The two teams complete the regular season Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. contest The Golden Eagles go after their fourth-straight league sweep in the contest.
