HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Tyler Kamerer collected a bases-clearing triple and scored on an error later during the play to lift Marshall to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over No. 13 Southern Miss in a Sun Belt Conference game at Jack Cook Field.
The Golden Eagles (21-9 overall, 7-3 Sun Belt) had a two-game winning streak snapped as they opened an eight-game road swing – their longest string away from home since the 2012 season.
The first five innings proved to be a pitchers' duel between Golden Eagle starter JB Middleton and Marshall's Bryce Blevins as both teams were held scoreless.
Southern Miss finally got to Blevins in the sixth. After a leadoff walk by Tucker Stockman, Joey Urban reached on a sacrifice bunt when Blevins throw to second was wild. A bunt single by Jake Cook loaded the bases before Nick Monistere knocked in a couple of runs with a single up the middle. Matthew Russo followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 advantage.
Blevins ended up getting a 122-pitch complete game, limiting the Golden Eagles to two earned runs on five hits with a walk and six strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 3-3. After allowing three runs in the sixth, Blevins retired nine of the final 10 batters to end the contest.
Middleton, who limited the Herd to four hits through five hits, walked the first two batters to open the sixth. After a strikeout, he hit a Marshall batter with a pitch to load the bases. Southern Miss then went to its bullpen for closer Colby Allen and Kamerer hammered a 3-1 pitch into the right-center field gap to clear the bases. Monistere mishandled the ball to allow the fourth runner to score.
Allen, who finished the final 2 2/3 innings, allowed a run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout to suffer the loss to fall to 3-3.
Marshall (15-15, 4-6) won for the third-straight game.
Due to rain expected Sunday, the two teams will now play an 11 a.m. CT doubleheader Saturday to complete the series.
