HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Nick Monistere homered to left center in the bottom of the ninth to lead No. 22 Southern Miss to a 5-4 non-conference baseball victory over Southeastern Louisiana Wednesday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
With his game-winning homer, Monistere extended his current team-best hitting streak to eight games – tying his career high – while registering his 22nd RBI over the last eight games.
With the score tied with one out in the ninth, Monistere took a 2-0 pitch from Aiden Vosburg over the left centerfield wall for his team-leading 15th home run. Vosburg suffered the loss to fall to 2-3, after allowing a run on a hit with two walks and a strikeout over the final 1 1/3 innings.
SLU (31-10) opened the scoring with a solo run in the third on a TJ Salvaggio run-scoring single. Southern Miss then took its first lead in the bottom of the frame. After a leadoff walk by Jake Cook, Matthew Ruso delivered a one-out single that put runners at the corners. Paetow then singled in the first run, before the Golden Eagles added another following a Lion throwing error.
The game remained that way until the seventh when SLU took the lead with three runs. Ben Robichaux accounted for the first Lion run in the inning after leading off with a walk. He later went to third on a single and scored on the play when the ball ricocheted off Carson Paetow's glove. Giovanni Licciardi followed with his first homer of the year – a two-run shot.
The Golden Eagles, though, scratched away with solo runs in each of the last three frames.
Cook's RBI single in the seventh cut the deficit to one run, before Davis Gillespie – who doubled and walked three times – earned a free pass with the bases loaded in the eighth to tie the game. That set up the dramatic finish for the Golden Eagles (28-13) in the ninth.
Colby Allen, the ninth of nine Golden Eagle pitchers, retired six of the seven batters he faced over the last two innings as he surrendered a lone walk with three strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 4-4.
Southern Miss returns to action this weekend when they travel to App State for a Sun Belt Conference series. The three-game set begins Friday at 5 p.m. CT.
