
Men’s Golf Holds Seventh Place after Opening Day of Old Waverly Collegiate

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss shot team rounds of 287 and 294 to hold seventh place after the first 36 holes of the Old Waverly Collegiate, Monday, in West Point, Miss.
Being held at the par 72, 7,088-yard Old Waverly Golf Club, the Golden Eagles saw three players shoot par or below over the first 18 holes. Sophomore Benjamin Fernandez (Asuncion, Paraguay) fired a first-round 70, while senior Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) added a 71 and junior Will Burnham (Jackson, Miss.) registered a 72 to put Southern Miss in fifth after the first circuit.
The second round saw sophomore Supakorn Amornchaichan (Pattaya City, Thailand) record a team-low round of 71, while Fernandez added a 72 as the team finished the final 18 holes six-over for the second round.
Fernandez ranked tied for No. 19 to lead Southern Miss with a two-under 142, while Burnham ranks second among the Golden Eagles at 146, with a 31st-place tie showing after adding a second-round 74. Amornchaichan overcame a first-round 77 to finish the day at 148 to put him in a 42nd-place tie.
The trio of Dupuy, freshman Matthew Javier (Toronto, Ontario) and Filip Sakota (Milan, Italy) are all tied in 52nd place with a 151. Dupuy shot a second-round 80, while Javier posted scores of 74 and 77. Sakota, who is playing as an individual, shot rounds of 76 and 75.
The Golden Eagles hold a 581-stroke total through 36 holes, trailing leader Ole Miss (536) by 45 strokes. Host Mississippi State (561), Alabama (563), Troy (564) and Memphis (572) round out the top five in the standings of this 13-team event.
The final round on Tuesday will have tee times starting at 8:00 a.m. until 10:20 a.m.
