HATTIESBURG, Miss. – No. 20 Southern Miss bunched together four consecutive hits to explode for three runs in the bottom of the seventh in breaking a deadlocked score en route to a 7-4 series-clinching victory over UNCW Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (11-5) won all four weekend non-conference series this spring as they continue their seven-game homestand Tuesday versus UTRGV. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
Davis Gillespie had two hits and knocked in three runs, which included a solo home run, his team-leading fifth of the year, to go along with a two-run double in the seventh.
With the score tied 4-4 in the seventh, Jake Cook opened the inning with a bloop ground-rule double to open the frame. Joey Urban followed with a perfect bunt single down the third-base line to put runners at the corners. Ozzie Pratt followed with a two-base hit of his own to score Cook, before Gillespie added his two-run double on a hard liner down the left field line.
The Seahawks (8-8) initially opened the scoring as Bromley Thornton reached base and advanced to third on an errant throw on a ground ball to Pratt at shortstop. Mac Gillespie then added an RBI groundout to take the early one-run UNCW advantage.
Seth Smith tied the game in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI single up the middle and the two teams exchanged lone runs in the next inning via RBI groundout by Trevor Lucas and Gillespie's solo homer off the scoreboard in left center.
Southern Miss took its first lead of the contest at 4-2 in the fourth, courtesy of an RBI single from Tucker Stockman and a run-scoring triple from Cook. It was one of three hits for Cook in the contest.
The Seahawks, though, re-tied the game with an RBI double from Lucas in the fifth and a run-scoring balk charged against Golden Eagle reliever Brooks Willoughby.
Five Southern Miss pitchers combined for 14 UNCW strikeouts as Willoughby went 11/3 innings of scoreless relief – posting three strikeouts – to earn the victory and improve to 1-0. Colby Allen threw the last two frames, punching out three, to earn his third save.
Mason Murdock, who started the seventh for the Seahawks out of the bullpen, gave up a hit to all four batters he faced to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1.
Urban and Stockman also enjoyed two hits in the 13-hit Golden Eagle attack.
