HATTIESBURG, Miss. – UNCW homered twice off Southern Miss starter JB Middleton and the visiting Seahawks captured the opening game of a three-game weekend series, 6-3, Friday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (9-5) opened a seven-game homestand with their second-straight loss as Middleton allowed his first earned runs of the season, giving up a total of five over five innings.
Southern Miss jumped out early with a home run by Carson Paetow in the second on a solo home run to right for his fourth of the year.
The Seahawks, which Middleton retired their first six hitters, exploded for three runs in the third as Bromley Thornton led off the inning with a solo home run, his first of the year. Bryan Arendt walked and then scored via a triple by Kevin Jones. UNCW then finished the inning's scoring on an RBI groundout by Tanner Thach.
UNCW (8-6) added to its lead in the fifth on a two-run homer by Alec DeMartino for his third of the year.
That finished Middleton's day as he allowed those five runs on five hits with four walks and a career-best eight strikeouts to suffer the loss to fall to 2-1.
The Golden Eagles, which left the bases loaded in the fifth with no one scoring, got an RBI single from Cook in the sixth. It was the first career three-hit game for Cook, but the home squad still left two runners stranded in the sixth.
UNCW starter Zane Taylor worked in to the sixth and gave up two runs on nine hits with a walk and six strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 4-0. Trace Baker threw the final 3 1/3 to earn his third save. It got a little bumpy for Baker in the ninth, who allowed a run on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
After a strikeout to open the final frame, Cook doubled. After a couple of walks to load the bases, Davis Gillespie hit a sacrifice fly to center. Paetow was then hit by a pitch before Monistere flew out to end the game.
Thach had added an insurance run in the top half of the ninth with an RBI single.
The two teams continue the series Saturday with a 12 noon contest. The game was moved up two hours due to expected rain later in the afternoon.
