HATTIESBURG, Miss. – True freshman Drew Barrett collected a go-ahead, pinch-hit double to highlight an eight-run eighth as Southern Miss rallied for a 11-4 come-from-behind Sun Belt Conference baseball victory over Old Dominion late Saturday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (14-5 overall, 2-0 Sun Belt) won for the fifth-straight time as the start of Saturday's game was delayed six hours due to bad weather earlier in the day.
Southern Miss trailed 4-3 in the eighth when Joey Urban and Tucker Stockman registered back-to-back one-out singles. Barrett then pinch hit and took a 2-1 Ben Moore pitch that hit off the left field wall that scored both Urban and Ty Long, who pinch ran for Stockman. After a wild pitch moving Barrett to third, Jake Cook knocked in the runner with an infield single.
After an out and another single by Davis Gillespie, Matthew Russo doubled both runners home with a shot down the third-base line. Nick Monistere followed with an RBI double of his own, before Carson Paetow blasted a two-run homer to right for his team-leading sixth home run to complete the inning's scoring.
It was Paetow's second home run of the game – he also hit a two-run shot in the fourth for the Golden Eagles' first runs of the game – giving him a pair of two homer games this spring.
Colby Allen gave up just one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts over the final five innings in relief of Kros Sivley to get the victory and improve to 3-1.
The Monarchs (4-12, 0-2) jumped out to a 4-0 advantage as Luke Waters belted a pair of home runs – a two-run shot in the first and a solo blast in the second – to give him two for the year. ODU added an unearned run off Sivley in the third via a Golden Eagle error as he ended his outing with four runs allowed (three earned) on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts over four innings.
Paetow's first home run cut the gap to 4-2 in the fourth and Russo added a seventh-inning sacrifice fly to help the Golden Eagles trail by just one run.
Moore gave up eight runs on nine hits over 2 2/3 innings with a walk and four strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 0-2.
Southern Miss goes after a sweep with a 12 noon game Sunday.
