Chiante' Tramble made an early three-pointer for Southern Miss, but the Golden Eagles only started the game 1-for-6 from deep. Ole Miss went on to follow that stretch with a 7-0 run that put the Rebels ahead by 10 with just over six minutes left in the opening half.
Southern Miss clawed back into the game late in the half, with Dylan Brumfield making a layup that cut the lead to seven following a Djahi Binet free throw. Brumfield then drained his first three-pointer of the season, and Taveras followed with a layup to make it a six-point game.
AJ Storr hit a pair of free throws with 1:36 left in the half to put Ole Miss up eight, but Taveras started a 6-0 run to end the half. Weeks hit a jump shot at the final second to make it 31-29 at the half.
The Golden Eagles started the second half on a 6-2 run to go ahead by two. Ole Miss answered, but Southern Miss did as well to go up by five with 13:42 to go in the game. Ole Miss, though, went on a 10-3 run shortly after to take the lead. Southern Miss went on a seven-minute stretch with no field goals, which allowed the Rebels to pull ahead by nine with five minutes to go.
Taveras gave the Golden Eagles a late spark with a big dunk and then scored again to cut it to five. The Rebels answered again and went up nine with two minutes to go. Binet and Taveras both scored – Binet twice – to cut the deficit to four with 1:07 on the clock. Malik Dia, though, put the Golden Eagles out of reach with a baseline dunk shortly after the Taveras layup.
Brumfield hit a pair of free throws in the final seconds, but Ole Miss made four of its own to seal the win. Tramble hit a three with three seconds left, but it was too late as Ole Miss hung on for its third-straight win over Southern Miss at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
