Men's Basketball Tops Cajuns in Low-Scoring Affair to Open SBC Play

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Golden Eagles' bench provided a big spark for Southern Miss (7-5, 0-0 Sun Belt) as it opened Sun Belt play with a 62-54 win over Louisiana (1-11, 0-0 Sun Belt) on Thursday night at Reed Green Coliseum.

In what was a low-scoring first half, Tylik Weeks provided a spark six minutes into the game with a left-handed flush. The highlight dunk cut into the Louisiana lead, but the Cajuns managed to stretch the advantage back to five on back-to-back Jaxon Olvera jumpers.
The Golden Eagles went on a nearly five-minute scoreless drought until Chiante' Tramble hit the first of two three-pointers in the first half. His second tied the game at 17-17 with 6:18 to go. It also started a 10-0 run to close out the half as Southern Miss led 24-17 at the break.
After shooting the ball at a 25 percent clip in the first half, Southern Miss shot 43.8 percent over the final 20 minutes. Despite that number, the Golden Eagles went on numerous stretches of scoreless basketball of at least two minutes.
The scoring drought allowed Louisiana to make it 38-37 Dorian Finister filled up the scoring column. Looking to break the scoreless streak, Dylan Brumfield made a free throw and jumper to give the Golden Eagles some breathing room. Louisiana cut it to a one-point game one more time before an Israel Hart three-pointer provided a dagger.
Following Hart's three-pointer, Southern Miss went on a 7-0 run to take a 10-point lead into the final two minutes. Brewer Carruth gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the night at 12 on a baseline jumper with 35 seconds to play. Hart nailed a couple of free throws down the stretch to seal the win and his 17-point night.
