Lady Eagles Stay Undefeated in Win Over Southeastern

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball rolled to an 86-53 victory over Southeastern on Tuesday night at Reed Green Coliseum. Eleven Lady Eagles scored with four posting double-figures with two finishing with double-doubles.
Carly Keats (Philadelphia, Miss.) led all scorers with 17 points as the Lady Eagles moved to 5-0 overall for the first time since 2023 and for just the 11th time in school history. Natalie Huff led the Lady Lions with 16 points and six rebounds in the game.
Southeastern (1-3) jumped out in front of Southern Miss (5-0) with a quick 7-0 lead before Whitney Hart (Baton Rouge, La.) came off the bench and got the Lady Eagles on the board. The basket sparked an 13-0 run that saw Southern Miss take over both ends of the floor.
Hayleigh Breland (Wiggins, Miss.) gave Southern Miss the lead for good with just over four minutes left in the first quarter. Southern Miss' defense placed lid on the Lady Lions' basket, holding SLU scoreless from the field for over six minutes. Southeastern broke its cold streak with 58 seconds left, but Southern Miss held the 15-11 advantage entering the second quarter.
The Lady Eagles stacked possession early into the frame, building off a 5-of-9 start from the floor to lead 28-17 at the media break. Meloney Thames (Philadelphia, Miss.) gave Southern Miss its 30th point at the free throw line, sparking another quick run.
At the half, Southern Miss had a 39-22 lead and eight players had found the basket. Southern Miss finished 15-of-34 (44.1 percent) from the floor overall, but failed to find the basket from long range, starting 0-of-6.
The cold start from the arc continued until 5:49 in the third quarter when Keats drilled the Lady Eagles' first trey of the game, snapping an 0-of-11 cold spurt. The two teams duked it out in the third with Southern Miss taking the quarter 18-16.
Southern Miss broke the ice from deep on the first possession of the fourth quarter thanks to a Breland three. After starting the game 0-of-11 from three, Southern Miss started the fourth quarter 7-of-7. The three-point outburst fueled a monster 17-4 run in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter.
Six different Lady Eagles made a three-pointer in the frame to put away the game. Southern Miss rattled off 29 fourth quarter points and shot 11-of-14 overall in the frame. Miriam Prince (Philadelphia, Miss.) got her first points as a Lady Eagle with a three-pointer late in the frame as well.
As a team, Southern Miss finished 33-of-66 (50.0 percent) overall and overcame its cold start from deep to finish 9-of-23 (39.1 percent). Four Lady Eagles scored in double-figures led by Keats' 17 and followed by Sakyia White (Tuscaloosa, Ala.), Jakayla Johnson (Clinton, Miss.) and Thames, who each scored 14, 12 and 11, respectively.
White and Johnson also pulled down double-doubles, the first of the year for the undefeated Lady Eagles. Southeastern shot just 33.3 percent (20-of-60) from the floor and was held to a 23.5 percent (4-of-17) mark in the fourth quarter. The Lady Lions were just 2-of-18 (11.1 percent) from three-point range.
