Lady Eagles Face First Road Test at Jacksonville State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball hits the road for the first time this season to take on Jacksonville State on Thursday night at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Tipoff between the Lady Eagles and Gamecocks is set for 6:30 p.m. with broadcasts on the Southern Miss Sports Network and ESPN+.
The Lady Eagle Courtside Pregame Show begins on 92.7 WFOR-FM at 6 p.m. with the Voice of the Lady Eagles, Jason Baker, providing the broadcast for fans on the Southern Miss Sports Network and Southern Miss Game Day App.
Southern Miss (3-0) looks to move to 4-0 on the year and for just the fifth time in the last 25 years with a win over Jacksonville State (1-1). In the Lady Eagles' last time on the floor, Southern Miss raced to a 113-39 victory over Blue Mountain Christian. The point total was the first 100-point game since 2014 and first 110-point game since 1994, setting a new high scoring mark for the 21st-century.
True freshman Ramiah "Moonie" Augurson (Monroe, La.) enjoyed a breakout performance, scoring 17 points to lead all scorers on the day. All five Lady Eagle starters also finished with double-figure efforts while Je'Mya Evans (Gulfport, Miss.) led both teams with 10 rebounds.
About the Gamecocks
Jacksonville State lost its last game, 66-54, at North Alabama on Monday night. The game was the Gamecocks' first away from home on the year after opening the 2025-26 season with a 92-35 win over LaGrange on Nov. 3.
Two Gamecocks, Makala Hobdy and Maria Sanchez-Ponce, are tied with 11.5 points per game to lead the team in scoring. Mya Barnes leads the team with 7.0 rebounds per game while Kyera Thornsbury has nine assists through two games.
Head coach Rick Pietri is in his 13th season in Jacksonville with a 182-173 overall ledger. He is in his 26th season as a Division I head coach, previously spending 13 years at South Alabama (2000-13). He holds an 8-2 all-time record against Southern Miss in his tenure
The Jacksonville State Series
Southern Miss leads the all-time series 3-1 with the home team winning in each of the previous four contests. Southern Miss took the first game 68-66 on Nov. 28, 1997, in the Lady Eagle Classic and then took a 2-0 advantage after an 81-61 win on Nov. 17, 2006.
Jacksonville State's first and only win in the series came on Dec. 1, 2007, with a 76-74 win in Jacksonville. Southern Miss took the last meeting in the series, 75-58, on Nov. 25, 2011.
