Golden Eagles Soccer Drops Home Sun Belt Match to ULM
10/5/2025 3:47:00 PM | Women's Soccer
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's soccer (2-10-1, 1-5-0 SBC) battled throughout a physical home contest, falling 3–1 to ULM (8-2-3, 3-0-3 SBC) on Sunday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
Southern Miss leveled the match at 1–1 through Chloe Taylor in the 31st minute, her second of the season, after she created a pocket of space at the top of the box and drove a low finish inside the near post. The visitors nudged back in front just before the break and added a third midway through the second half, but the Black & Gold kept coming, stacking territory and set pieces as the clock wound down.
The Golden Eagles produced some of their sharpest sequences after the half. Wide rotations opened lanes to the endline, midfielders won second balls to extend attacks, and sustained pressure generated four corner kicks, three in the final quarter-hour, as Southern Miss searched for a late lifeline. The hosts put two shots on frame and finished with five attempts overall, asking questions of the ULM back line with diagonal runs and early service as the match grew increasingly stretched.
Defensively, the group stayed organized through long stretches without the ball, holding a disciplined line that forced two ULM offsides and compressing the middle to reduce clean looks. Goalkeeper Maddie Ellis turned away six efforts and managed her box confidently on crosses and goal kicks, helping the back absorb waves of pressure and reset the block. By the numbers, ULM held a 17–5 edge in shots and a 10–2 margin in shots on goal, while corners finished nearly even at 6–5 in favor of the visitors.
The second-half push reflected continued growth in game management, especially the late flurry of set pieces sparked by ball recoveries in midfield and quick restarts that tilted the field in the closing minutes
