Southern Miss will look to carry a compact shape on the road, funnel play wide, and turn first-contact wins into quick outlets. Expect clean exits from the back, purposeful clearances, and stacked set pieces to generate second-ball chances in the box. In the attack, Ryan Smith leads with 3 goals and remains perfect from the spot. Raquelle Mitchell adds 2 goals and 1 assist as a direct threat in transition, and Chloe Taylor has 2 goals including a conference winner while setting the tone in the press.
The Golden Eagles favor quality over volume with 12 goals on 124 shots and 61 on frame, sit at 3-for-3 on penalties, and have earned 39 corners. In goal, Maddie Ellis' workload highlights the need for strong box management, cleaner first contacts, and quick distribution to flip field position.
Marshall presents a balanced, disciplined profile that is efficient in the final third and steady at the back. The Thundering Herd have 28 goals on 180 shots with 88 on target, carry a strong restart footprint with 71 corners, and defend at a 1.20 team goals-against average while converting 3-for-3 from the spot.
Managing width and denying clean crossing windows will be central for Southern Miss, as will avoiding cheap fouls in delivery zones. If the Eagles keep the middle compact and turn territory into set-piece pressure, they create a clear pathway to a result in Huntington.
Southern Miss and Marshall have met 15 times since 2005, with the Thundering Herd leading 8–4–3. The first meeting went to the Golden Eagles, 3–0 in Hattiesburg on Oct. 14, 2005, and the most recent was a 3–3 draw at Marshall Bell on Oct. 10, 2024. USM is 3–4–3 at home and 1–4–0 in Huntington, a history that reflects tight, low-margin contests.
