HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Southern Miss (2–14–1, 1–9–0 SBC) closed its season on Wednesday night, falling 5–0 to Marshall (8–5–4, 4–2–4 SBC) at Hoops Family Field. The Thundering Herd scored three times before halftime and added two after the break.
Despite the scoreline, the Golden Eagles kept competing and found stretches of pressure after halftime. Maddie Ellis made six saves in 72 minutes of action before Grace O'Shaughnessy finished the final 18. In front of them, Addie Siders and Rhiley Potteiger each went the full 90, battling a heavy set-piece load as Marshall racked up nine corners on the night. Lorilee Taylor and Shaelynn Quick both tested the keeper, while Rhyleigh Marks and Zayla Reagan put chances on frame during a spirited second-half push. Paula Castro Garcia added a late shot on goal off the bench as USM out-shot the hosts 5–4 in shots on target after the break.
Marshall scored at 25:38 through Luana Gusmao, added a penalty from Bailey Fisher at 34:56, and made it 3–0 at 41:03 on an Angel Fowler finish. Fowler struck again at 59:48 and capped the night with a penalty at 83:55. The Herd outshot Southern Miss 22–6 and led 12–5 in shots on goal, with a 9–2 edge in corners. Goalkeepers combined for seven saves for USM and five for Marshall. Possession favored Marshall 67% to 33%.
Southern Miss finishes the 2025 campaign with a young core that continued to compete to the final whistle. The effort from Ellis in goal, the full-match shift from Siders and Potteiger across the back, and the second-half energy from Quick, Marks, Reagan and Castro Garcia set a standard the group can carry into the offseason.
