HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss (2–13–1, 1–8–0 SBC) fell 2–1 to App State (6–7–3, 2–4–3 SBC) on Friday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
The first half played on fine margins, Southern Miss kept its block compact, funneled play wide, and limited clean looks while trying to flip field position through quick outlets. App State finally broke through at 42:28, with Libby Bermingham, to send the visitors into the locker room up 1–0. The response was immediate after the interval, Zayla Reagan pounced at 49:28 to level it 1–1 and tilt momentum toward the hosts. Only for the Mountaineers to answer at 55:40 when Izzi Wood buried the winner. From there, the contest turned into a game-management battle, App State worked to compress central lanes and bleed minutes, while USM searched for the final pass to unlock a late equalizer.
Statistically, Southern Miss generated 5 shots with 3 on target, threatened in transition, and was flagged offside once as it chased the game late. App State produced 11 shots with 5 on frame and held a 4–0 edge in corners, reflecting more territory in the attacking third; possession tracked 54% - 46% to the visitors on the day. Maddie Ellis finished with 3 saves over the full 90 for the Golden Eagles, while Anna Claire Jacobi recorded 2 saves for App State.
Southern Miss takes confidence from the equalizer and looks to cash it in for points next Wednesday to close Sun Belt play.
