HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss head women's golf coach Colton Cowan makes his Golden Eagle debut this week as the team opens the season at the Powercat Invitational in Manhattan, Kas. The two-day event hosted by Kansas State will be played at Colbert Hills Golf Club.
The field features Austin Peay, Bethune-Cookman, Bowling Green, Central Arkansas, Cincinnati, Dayton, Houston Christian, Incarnate Word, Jacksonville State, North Dakota, North Texas, Northern Colorado, Southern Miss, UTRGV, Wichita State, and Kansas State. Monday – the opening day – will feature two rounds of golf on the par-72, 6,439-yard track. The third and final round will be played Tuesday morning.
Cowan tabbed the following golfers to the lineup: Momoka Ando, Louise Cuyvers, Ragini Navet, Elena Melich, and Alma Betoret. Ando returns as arguably one of the best golfers in program history. The Tokyo, Japan native set the program record for the single-season individual stroke average last season at 72.93. After averaging 73.57 strokes per round during the 2022-23 season, the senior now holds the top two spots in the program's record book. Navet is coming off a freshman campaign that aided the Golden Eagles in several tournaments. She played in all 10 events and fired five rounds of par-or-better golf en route to averaging 75.55 strokes per round.
The Golden Eagles get another boost of added experience with Melich, who has played 92 rounds of golf for Southern Miss – that's the most of any active golfer. Melich averaged 74.73 strokes per round and enjoyed a season-low 69 in the first round at the ULM Invitational. Betoret is back for her junior season after playing in seven events last year. Cuyvers, the only newcomer on the roster this season, will make her collegiate debut in Monday's opening round.
The first round will tee off at 8 a.m. by way of a shotgun start. Southern Miss is paired with Central Arkansas and Houston Christian in the first two rounds. Round two will follow immediately after the first round, while Tuesday's final round will tee off at 8 a.m.
