Golden Eagles Sit in Sixth After Season Debut at Powercat Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kans. – Elena Melich paced Southern Miss as the Golden Eagles opened the women's golf season at the Powercat Invitational at Colbert Hills Golf Course. Melich shot herself into seventh place after two rounds, while Southern Miss is in sixth place.
Melich opened her senior campaign with a two-over 74 that featured three birdies. The Spaniard then shot a one-over 73 in her afternoon round at Colbert Hills. Melich finished the opening day with eight birdies, while five on them came on the back nine. The Golden Eagles got a solid bounce-back round from Momoka Ando in the afternoon after she followed an opening-round 81 with a two-over 74. The Tokyo, Japan native is tied for 33rd heading into Tuesday's final round.
Ragini Navet is tied for 37th after firing a three-over 75 in the morning round and then a nine-over 81 in the afternoon. Freshman Louise Cuyvers shot a nine-over 81 in her collegiate debut and responded in the afternoon round with a five-over 77. Alma Betoret, who tied for 48th with Cuyvers, matched the Belgian's scores in both rounds.
Southern Miss trails Kansas State, North Texas, Jacksonville State, Austin Peay and Wichita State on leaderboard. The Golden Eagles are four back from the Shockers, and 10 back from the Governors. Kansas State is five-over par and leads the field by 10 strokes.
