MANHATTAN, Kans. --Â Senior Elena Melich fired a one-over 73 Tuesday to vault herself to a top five finish at the Powercat Invitational in Manhattan, Kans.Â
"Overall, it was a good first tournament," said head women's golf coach Colton Cowan. "It was a tough course that rewarded good shots and punished you on bad shots. We have a lot to be proud of as a group, and a lot that we can learn from as well. We will take the good with the bad and continue to develop as a program."
Melich, who was the highest Golden Eagle finisher, went four-over par at the 54-hole event. Southern Miss finished in sixth as a team and was four shots back of a top five finish. The Golden Eagles got a big round from Alma Betoret as the junior shot a four-over 76 in Tuesday's final round to save her best score for the final day. Betoret finished tied for 40th after shooting a nine-over 81 and five-over 72 on Monday.Â
Momoka Ando finished tied for 34th after firing a four-over 78 on the course. Freshman Louise Cuyvers matched her round two score with a five-over 77 to finish tied for 44th in her collegiate debut. Ragini Navet fired a nine-over 81 in her third round on the course. Her score did not factor into Southern Miss' team total today.Â
Kansas State took home first place after finished 12 strokes ahead of North Texas. Jacksonville State, Austin Peay and Bowling Green rounded out the top five. The Golden Eagles will turn their attention to the Hoover Classic in Birmingham, Ala. The two-day event will start Sept. 16.
