
Soccer Falls to Alabama 4-0 Sunday

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.-Southern Miss (1-2, 0-0 Sun Belt) fell to Alabama (5-1, 0-0 SEC) 4-0 Sunday at the Alabama Soccer Complex, as The Crimson Tide powered ahead with three goals in the first period.
Four Alabama players scored in the match, all assisted by different teammates. The Crimson Tide maximized their opportunities in the first period, converting seven shots into three early goals.
The Crimson Tide struck first in the 15th minute with a shot from junior Gianna Paul, assisted by Kiley Kukan and Madeline Padelski. Paul extended her scoring streak to three games, having scored five goals in the last three games.Â
Ten minutes later, Brooke Steere tallied another goal for Alabama on an assist from Lexi Meyer. After a foul on Shaelynn Quick, Nedya Sawan converted a penalty kick in the 29th minute, capping a three-goal first period from the Crimson Tide.
Alabama continued to press on the attack, firing 14 shots in the second half. Southern Miss created its best opportunity of the game early in the period as Chloe Taylor forced a mishap from Alabama goalkeeper Ellie Lanyi, sending the ball to Alice Williamson for a fair shot. However, Lanyi recovered with a save to prevent the goal.
Maison Smith added Alabama's final goal of the game in the 62nd minute on an assist from Leah Kunde, cementing her team's fifth consecutive win.
Southern Miss starting goalkeeper Maddie Ellis earned two saves on the night and Kesaia Bruni also earned four saves in the match, tying a season-high.Â
Four Golden Eagles recorded two shots in the match-Lorilee Taylor, Raquelle Mitchell, Chloe Taylor and Williamson.
Southern Miss now returns home to prepare for its next match against UAB on Sept. 8 at 1 p.m.
