
Soccer Falls to No. 15 Auburn

AUBURN, Ala.-Â No.15 Auburn's (2-0, 0-0 SEC) attack took control against Southern Miss (1-1, 0-0 Sun Belt) Thursday evening, completing a six-goal shutout against the Golden Eagles.
Five Tigers scored in the match, led by Sydnie Thibodaux's first career brace. The Tigers powered ahead on a four-goal advantage in the first period, followed by Thibodaux's two goals in the second half.
Auburn outshot Southern Miss 21-1, with the Tigers firing 11 shots on goal. A week after recording the fourth-most shots in a single game in program history in its season opener, Auburn held Southern Miss to its fewest shot attempts in a game since registering only one shot against Ole Miss on Sept. 11, 2022.
Auburn struck first in the ninth minute from a left-foot shot from senior Anna Haddock, assisted by Shelby Sallee.
Haddock returned the favor to Sallee in the 23rd minute, registering her 33rd career assist on a pass to the redshirt junior for her first goal at Auburn.Â
Ellis notched her first save of the evening and season in the 33rd minute, but Olivia Candelino soon tallied another goal for the Tigers in the 36th minute, increasing Auburn's lead to three.
Jordyn Crosby tallied a final goal of the first period for the Tigers, assisted by Lily Borders and Dylan Driver to go into halftime up 4-0.Â
Senior goalkeeper Kesaia Bruni came in the goal at the start of the second half for the Golden Eagles, notching two early saves before the Tigers struck again on a shot from Thibodaux in the 60th minute. Thibodaux scored again in the 70th minute to complete her brace.
Bruni finished the game with four saves, increasing her season total to seven through two games.Â
Auburn now leads the all-time series against Southern Miss 3-1, winning the last two games at home, both of which were shutout victories.
