
Soccer Faces Auburn in First Road Test of 2024 Season

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-Â Southern Miss Soccer (1-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) prepares for its first road match of the season, traveling to Auburn, Ala. to take on the No.15 ranked Auburn Tigers Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The Golden Eagles opened their season last Thursday at home with a 5-0 victory against Mississippi Valley State, recording the program's first season opener win since Feb. 3, 2021 against Nicholls.
Southern Miss' attack fired on all cylinders, launching 43 shots throughout the game, the fourth-most shots in program history and most in a single game since Aug. 30, 2013.
Four Golden Eagles scored in the match, including freshman Raquelle Mitchell's two goals and goals from senior Adaira Nakano, redshirt junior Alice Williamson and redshirt sophomore Shaelynn Quick.
Nakano floated a header into the goal for the first points of the season in the 20th minute, assisted by Mallory Tapper and Victoria Clark. Mitchell found her first collegiate goal in the 32nd minute from a deflection and Williamson scored on a header from a corner kick by Nakano to tally the final goal in the first period.
Four minutes into the second half, Quick fired off a deep shot for her first career goal and Mitchell capped the game for Southern Miss with her second goal of the match.
Mitchell's brace marked the first time a Golden Eagle has scored multiple goals in their debut since senior transfer Obafemi Alao scored two against South Alabama on Aug. 26, 2008.
Now, Southern Miss turns to its first test on the road against an Auburn team that knocked off No. 5 Clemson at home last week to open their season.Â

- The Tigers finished the 2023 season with an 8-7-5 standing with an appearance in the SEC Tournament Quarterfinals.Â
- The Tigers started the regular season with a 4-0 victory over No. 5 Clemson at the Auburn Soccer Complex, marking the largest margin victory over a ranked opponent in program history and first win over a top five opponent since 2011. It also marked Auburn's first shutout against a ranked opponent since 2022. Auburn jumped to No. 15 in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll after being unranked in preseason, while Clemson fell out of the Top 25.
- Auburn's 2024 roster features 13 seniors, the largest senior class in program history.Â
- Anna Haddock ranks third among active Division I players for career assists. Haddock notched her 32nd assist last week against Clemson.
