HATTIESBURG, Miss. – A pair of former Southern Miss baseball players were traded to different organizations over the weekend and one other Golden Eagle was recalled to the Major Leagues earlier this month, highlighting the latest Golden Eagle professional baseball report.
Matthew Etzel started the weekend by being traded from Baltimore to the Tampa Bay Rays organization with two other minor league players, Friday, for right-handed starting pitcher Zach Eflin. Etzel, who was a member of the Double AA Bowie Baysox, now joins the Montgomery Biscuits at the same minor league level as he played for the Rays.
On Sunday, New York Mets farmhand Tyler Stuart was sent to the Washington Nationals for MLB outfielder Jesse Winker. Stuart was assigned to the Double AA Harrisburg Senators.
Catcher Chuckie Robinson, a member of the 2016 Golden Eagle Conference USA tournament champion squad, returned to the big leagues for the first time since the 2022 season when he was recalled by the Chicago White Sox on July 19. The White Sox are the third organization for Robinson, who was originally drafted by the Houston Astros and later traded to the Cincinnati Reds, before joining the White Sox organization as a free agent prior to the start of this season.
Three more Golden Eagles, right-handed pitcher Niko Mazza (San Francisco Giants), outfielder Dalton McIntyre (Atlanta Braves) and right-handed pitcher Billy Oldham (Minnesota Twins) all signed contracts earlier this month, starting their respective professional careers.
Southern Miss now has 20 players playing in professional baseball, including three in the major leagues with Nick Sandlin (Cleveland), Matt Wallner (Minnesota) and Robinson.
