HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss right-handed pitcher Billy Oldham signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Minnesota Twins Wednesday afternoon.
Oldham, from Brookfield, Conn., recently completed his second season with the Golden Eagles after winning a national championship with Division III Eastern Connecticut State earlier in his collegiate career.
This past spring, Oldham posted a 7-3 record with a 4.48 earned run average and fanned a team-high 97 with only 28 walks in 94 1/3 innings. He appeared in 17 games during the season with 16 starts, including one complete game and one combined shutout. For his efforts, Oldham earned first-team All-Sun Belt honors and was a member of the league's all-tournament team.
In two seasons with the Golden Eagles, Oldham posted a 15-6 record with 186 strikeouts and 51 walks over 191 1/3 innings with a 3.90 ERA. He made 35 career appearances on the mound with 29 starts for Southern Miss.
Oldham helped the Golden Eagles to two Sun Belt tournament titles, a pair of 40-win seasons and two NCAA appearances, including a Super Regional berth in 2023.
Oldham now is the fourth former Golden Eagle to currently play in the Twins system. Outfielder Matt Wallner (2017-19) currently plays for the big-league team in Minneapolis, while both Ben Ethridge (2020-22) and Tanner Hall (2021-2023) play in the organization's Single A franchise in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Oldham had one year of eligibility remaining with the Golden Eagles.
