HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Four Southern Miss pitchers limited Southeastern Louisiana to a single tally as the Golden Eagles captured a 5-1 non-conference victory Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
With the win, the Golden Eagles (21-12) avenged a 7-6 walk-off loss to the Lions a week ago as this was the lone home game during a current eight-game stretch.
Drew Druckenmiller, who registered his first start as a Golden Eagle, limited the Lions to just one run over two hits with two walks and a season-high tying five strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings.
Chandler Best then threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk with two strikeouts to record the victory and improve to 2-0. After Peyton Lacy gave up three hits over a third of a frame, Kros Sivley limited the visitors to four hits over the final 3 2/3 with four hits to garner his third save.
Dalton McIntyre, who increased his Sun Belt Conference lead in hitting to .430 at the conclusion of the contest, upped his current hitting streak to nine games after collecting the first of three hits to open the first for the Golden Eagles. After a popout and a Slade Wilks single, Davis Gillespie gave Southern Miss the early advantage with an RBI single to score McIntyre.
The run was the 43rd of 209 scored by the Golden Eagles this season in the first inning as they improved to 13-5 when they plated at least one run in the opening frame.
Southern Miss added a second run an inning later with a pair of doubles from Matthew Russo and Nolan Tucker. The second double for Tucker drove in the second run in his first at bat since March 1, after being sidelined with a hand injury.
The Lions (19-14) scored their lone run in the third on a run-scoring Jake Killingsworth double – the first batter Best faced – before the home squad completed the game's scoring with the final three runs in the seventh.
McIntyre opened that inning with a double and then went to third on a wild pitch. Ozzie Pratt extended the lead to 3-1 with a sacrifice fly to right. Gillespie then doubled and went to third on a passed ball before scoring on a Carson Paetow infield single. Two more Lion passed balls in the frame led to Paetow scoring the final tally of the contest.
Lion starter, Hayden Robb, gave up two runs on five hits and a walk with one strikeout over 1 1/3 innings to suffer the loss and fall to 2-2.
The Golden Eagles return to the road this weekend when they travel to the greater Atlanta area for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Georgia State. The series opens Friday at 5 p.m. CT.
