MOBILE, Ala. – Ozzie Pratt delivered a two-out, go-ahead bloop single in the 11th with Gabe Broadus scoring all the way from first base on the hit to lift Southern Miss to a 6-5 extra-inning Sun Belt Conference victory over South Alabama Friday night at Eddie Stanky Field.
The Golden Eagles (19-11 overall, 7-3 Sun Belt) won their second extra-inning contest this season in three tries, while the Jaguars fell to 16-14, 3-7.
Dalton McIntyre led the Golden Eagles with three of their 10 hits, while both Slade Wilks and Billy Butler added two each.
With the score tied at 5-5 in the last inning, Broadus walked with one out. After a flyout by McIntyre, Pratt blooped a single between three players in short-center field and Broadus never stopped from first base and easily scored on the play.
The Golden Eagles initially jumped out with three runs in the second inning. Davis Gillespie opened the frame with a single and, after a lineout, Tucker Stockman reached on a fielding error by the Jaguar shortstop before Broadus loaded the bases with a walk.
McIntyre knocked in the first run with a single through the right side, before Wilks knocked in a pair with a single to left.
Stockman helped extend the lead an inning later. After a leadoff walk to Carson Paetow, the Golden Eagles then fanned twice before Stockman laced a single to center to drive home Paetow from second.
The Jaguars cut the deficit with a pair of runs in their half of the third. A single and two walks loaded the bases from starter Niko Mazza. Ethan Melton then blooped a hit to right that scored both runs before Paetow's throw from right cut down a runner at third base. A fielder's choice then ended the frame and got Mazza out of the jam.
Mazza then gave up a single and a walk to open the fourth to end his day. That gave the Jaguars a chance to cut into visitor's lead, but Kros Sivley came in to get out of the frame on a popup bunt back to him, followed by a pair of strikeouts to end the frame.
South Alabama, though, finally tied the game in the sixth on a two-run homer by Joseph Sullivan for his sixth of the year.
The Golden Eagles went ahead again in the top of the ninth as McIntyre recorded a single to open the frame. After a stolen base and a groundout that got him to third, Wilks doubled over the left fielder's head for a run-scoring double to make the score 6-5.
USA's Sullivan doubled to open the bottom of the ninth. After stealing third, Brennan Holt then registered a two-out single up the middle to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
Sivley pitched five strong relief innings for the Golden Eagles as he limited the Jaguars to two runs on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Allen then threw the final three innings and allowed a run on three hits with no walks and three punchouts to earn the victory and improve to 4-2.
Seth Carter, the third of three South Alabama pitchers, gave up two runs on three hits over with a walk and a strikeout over the final three frames to suffer the loss and fall to 2-1.
The two teams continue the series with a 2 p.m., contest Saturday.
