MOBILE, Ala. – Billy Oldham threw 6 1/3 innings and Slade Wilks drove in a pair of runs to lead Southern Miss to a 5-1 Sun Belt Conference series-clinching victory over South Alabama Saturday afternoon at Eddie Stanky Field.
The Golden Eagles won their third-of-four league series this spring, as they improved to 20-11 overall and 8-3 in league play, which is good for second place and only two games behind leader Louisiana. The Jaguars fell to 16-15, 3-8.
Oldham limited the Jags to just one run on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts as he garnered the victory and improved to 4-0. Oldham retired the first six batters he faced and seven of his final eight batters before coming out of the game in the seventh.
Southern Miss scored early again in this contest as they put together four singles in the opening frame to jump out to an early 2-0 advantage. Both Dalton McIntyre and Ozzie Pratt opened the contest with consecutive singles. After a flyout, Billy Butler singled to left, scoring McIntyre. Carson Paetow then moved both runners up a base with a groundout to the right side, before Davis Gillispie knocked a ball off of pitcher Cam Hill's glove that settled in the infield, which drove in Pratt for the second run.
Slade Wilks extended the visitors' lead in the third with a homer to right to open the frame. The homer was his seventh of the year and 39th of his career, which tied him for 10th on the school's career chart.
South Alabama got its only run in the third. After JG Bell opened the frame with a single, he stole second and went to third on a wild pitch, before Joseph Sullivan knocked him with a single of his own.
The Golden Eagles then finished scoring in the fifth. Tucker Stockman began the frame with a drive to left that the Jag left fielder caught but banged up against the wall and came out of his glove for a two-base error.
Stockman then went to third on a bunt single by Gabe Broadus. After a hit by pitch to McIntyre, Pratt and Wilks followed with back-to-back sacrifice flies.
Southern Miss scored five runs (three earned) on USA starter Cam Hill, who gave up nine hits over 5 1/3 innings with three strikeouts, suffered the loss and fell to 3-2.
Chandler Best came in for Oldham in the seventh and only allowed a walk with three strikeouts going the final 2 1/3 for Southern Miss.
McIntyre led the Golden Eagles with four of their 12 hits in the contest.
The series concludes with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday.
