Baseball Returns Home to Face Nationally Ranked Alabama

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team returns to action Tuesday when they welcome Alabama to Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.

The Golden Eagles (10-6) return home for the first of four home games this week. Following the Crimson Tide, Southern Miss opens Sun Belt Conference action with Marshall this weekend. The Crimson Tide comes into Hattiesburg having won 15 of their first 16 games to open the season.

Under first-year coach Rob Vaughn and a No. 14 ranking by D1Baseball.com, the Crimson Tide are off a three-game sweep over Lipscomb at home over the weekend. Alabama is hitting .345 this season with 30 home runs, while averaging 10.4 runs per game. The pitching staff has limited its opponents to a 3.31 ERA and has posted 159 strikeouts with only 45 walks.

Alabama leads the overall series 75-33, but the two teams have split the last 10 meetings and Southern Miss holds a three-game winning streak over the Crimson Tide at home.

A series win at Louisiana Tech over the weekend saw the Golden Eagles see improvement in their offensive output as they averaged 10.3 runs per game against the Bulldogs.

The top four hitters in the Golden Eagle lineup have really contributed over the last four games as they have combined for a .403 batting average (29-for-72) with 14 runs, four doubles, six home runs and 14 RBI. Both Dalton McIntyre, who is hitting first, and Slade Wilks, who is batted currently batting third, have tied the team's longest hitting streak of the year at eight games.

The Golden Eagles also hit a season-high five home runs at LA Tech Friday night. In the game, Billy Butler hit two round-trippers, while Dalton McIntyre, Nick Monistere and Slade Wilks each added one. It was the first time Southern Miss had five long balls in a game since at ULM on May 13, 2023. Butler also had the first Southern Miss two-homer contest since Dustin Dickerson hit a pair at Auburn on June 3 last season in the NCAA Tournament.

Senior right-hander Cole Boswell is scheduled to make his third start of the season against Alabama. He has appeared in three games with a pair of starts. He went 2 2/3 innings in his first start against Nicholls (2/21) and allowed no runs on a hit and a walk with two strikeouts in a no decision. He also started last Tuesday vs. Mississippi State in Pearl and gave up two runs on a hit with two walks and four strikeouts, which was also a no decision.

The Crimson Tide will throw freshman left-hander Zane Adams against the Golden Eagles. He is 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA this season.
