LAST TIME OUT
Southern Miss erased a 14-point deficit and held the high-powered Troy offense to a season-low in a 72-63 win over the Trojans. Southern Miss led for just five minutes, but it was the last five minutes of the game that belonged to the Lady Eagles.
The win moved Southern Miss to 12-9 overall and 5-6 in Sun Belt play, placing the Lady Eagles squarely back into the seeding discussion for Pensacola in March.
ABOUT GEORGIA SOUTHERN
The Eagles enter the day with an overall record of 13-10 and a Sun Belt record of 3-8 and are losers of their last seven games and eight of their last 10. Georgia Southern's offense runs through Terren Ward, a senior guard/forward from Jesup, Ga., that has quickly garnered attention for abilities on the court.
However, Ward alone has not been enough to overcome balanced team efforts from Georgia Southern's opponents. The Eagles finished nonconference play 10-2 and looked poised to make a good run to the top seeds but that quickly fizzled. Georgia Southern's offense is down almost 10 points per game in conference play compared to nonconference play and Ward has been tasked with playing extra minutes to keep games close.
In fact, Ward sat out Georgia Southern's last game at Georgia State, breaking her 22-game start streak on the year.
THE GEORGIA SOUTHERN SERIES
Southern Miss and Georgia Southern have met twice before with both coming at different tournaments in the 1990s. The first time the two paired up was in Birmingham, Ala., for the 1993-94 UAB Invitational. Southern Miss won the first matchup 94-72 and followed it up with a 97-78 win over Georgia State at the 1996 FIU Sun & Fun Classic.
The Lady Eagles are 2-0 all-time against Georgia Southern, though it has been almost 28 years since the series was played. Of note, Georgia Southern will be the 42nd team Southern Miss has played in a conference game in the NCAA and 51st when counting the old AIAW days prior to 1982.
AFTER THIS
Southern Miss heads to Buffalo, N.Y., for the second leg of the 2023-24 MAC-SBC Challenge. The Lady Eagles drew the Bulls of Buffalo as their second opponent of the intra-conference matchup and will play at Buffalo's Alumni Arena on Saturday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m. CT (2 p.m. ET).
