Davis’ Second Half Heroics Lead Lady Eagles Past Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – At the end of the first half, Domonique Davis stood with an uncharacteristically low 0 points. She then scored 22 points in the second half to dig Southern Miss out of an eight-point deficit and defeat Texas State 67-59 in the Strahan Arena at the University Events Center.
Southern Miss (17-11, 10-7 Sun Belt) turned the ball over a season-high 24 times with 19 turnovers through the first three quarters in an ugly defensive struggle. The Lady Eagles and Bobcats went punch for punch through the first half, even posting near-identical shooting lines with both going 13-of-25 from the floor with two three pointers. Knotted at 31, the two teams combined for 25 turnovers in 20 minutes of play but were still shooting 52 percent from the floor.
Texas State (13-17, 3-14 Sun Belt) surged out of the halftime locker room to take a six-point lead two minutes in to the third quarter, forcing a Lady Eagle timeout. The Bobcats led by as many as eight with 2:44 left in the third but Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) kept it close with seven points in the frame.
As the fourth quarter began, Texas State held a 49-44 advantage and scored the first bucket of the fourth quarter to make it 51-44. Davis then scored the next 11 points of the ball game to make it 55-51 in favor of the Lady Eagles and Jacorriah Bracey (Drew, Miss.) chipped in two layups of her own to make it a 15-0 Lady Eagle run.
The Bobcats stopped the bleeding with a pair of free throws but Melyia Grayson responded on the next possession with a layup of her own. Southern Miss held Texas State to a 2-of-14 showing from the floor in the final frame and just 10 points overall. Davis' 15 points in the fourth helped Southern Miss put up 23 points to take the eight-point win.
Native Texan Asjha Leake (Cibolo, Texas) scored seven points on 13 minutes of solid play, leading both teams with a +12 rating on the floor. The Lady Eagles placed three in double-figure scoring led by Davis' 22 and followed by Bracey's 12 and Noelani Cornfield's (Gowanda, N.Y.) 10.
