Southern Miss Splits Opening Day at Stetson Spring Fling

DELAND, Fla. – Golden Eagle beach volleyball split its first day of the season at Stetson's Spring Fling. Southern Miss fell to (RV) Florida Gulf Coast 3-2 before sweeping Eckerd College 5-0.

Ola Chudzik and Sarah Murczek paired together for Southern Miss' top flight and finished the day a perfect 2-0. Southern Miss' No. 1s took a three-set decision against Florida Gulf Coast, winning 15-13 in the third set. Jessica Fairly and Morgan Perry claimed Southern Miss' second point against FGCU, winning in straight sets.

Against Eckerd College, Southern Miss did not blink, sweeping the Tritons across the board for a 5-0 win. The fifth pairing of Fairly/Perry stayed perfect on the year, winning their two sets 21-12 and 21-12.

The pairs of Laurel Dennis/Sadie McAda, Ashlyn Rough/Valeria Siakidou Papakyriakou and Madison Cassidy/Dylan Russell all got their first wins of the year.

Southern Miss faces No. 16 Stetson and Mercer in its final day at the Stetson Spring Fling. Game time against the Hatters is set for 9 a.m. CT (10 a.m. ET) and the final game against Mercer is set for 1 p.m. CT (2 p.m. ET).
