Late ULM Rallies Knocks Off Southern Miss
2/22/2024 7:13:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MONROE, La. – Louisiana Monroe used a 20-point fourth quarter to snap Southern Miss' six-game conference win streak. The Lady Eagles pulled ULM down to a defensive struggle but ultimately fell 57-52 at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
Brikayla Gray (Hebron, Miss.) and Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) both went for double-doubles, combining for 25 points and 25 rebounds. Southern Miss also out-rebounded ULM 42-26 with the +16 margin on the glass being the largest since a +18 margin against Louisiana on Feb. 1.
Southern Miss won the tipoff and scored the first bucket of the game via a Grayson mid-range jumper. Gray, to her own right, scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the first half. Southern Miss grabbed 23 boards in the first half and held ULM to just eight overall and no offensive rebounds.
Monroe kept it close, taking its first and final lead of the game with 5:08 to play and led by as many as six down the stretch. Out of gas, the depleted Lady Eagles got no help in their comeback effort and fell to 15-11 overall and 8-7 in Sun Belt play.
Grayson's double-double is her 18th career double-double, moving her into sole possession of ninth place on the Lady Eagle charts. Gray's was the first of her career at Southern Miss with her 14 rebounds coming one short of her career high of 15.
