Women's Golf Knocks Off Georgia State, Corbacho Wins Individual Championship

GULFPORT, Miss. – Southern Miss women's golf finished the Great River Cup on a high note by knocking off Georgia State to claim the consolation championship Tuesday afternoon in Gulfport. Merche Corbacho finished as the individual champion at Windance Country Club.
Momoka Ando bounced back from a tough day one to beat Pariya Sanpanawat 4&3. Her fifth and final birdie on the par-5 seventh hole was the clincher for the junior from Japan. Her result tied the match with the Panthers at one-all after Taylor Trible fell 7&5 to Mahina Leveau.
Elena Melich and Alma Betoret both won their matches to help Southern Miss defeat Georgia State. Melich won 2&1 and won her match with a par on the 10th hole. Betoret also won 2&1 and clinched her match with a par on the 10th hole. She finished with two birdies on the day with one coming on a par 5.
Corbacho won 2&1 with a birdie on the 17th hole. It was her third birdie after having two on the front nine. Fernanda Gorostiaga rounded out the Southern Miss lineup with a 2&1 finish over Silka Solomon. ULM defeated James Madison in dramatic fashion to claim the team title. Southern Miss' win gave it a fifth-place finish.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, March 10 at the Tulane Classic. The three-day event will be held at English Turn Golf & Country Club in New Orleans, La.
