HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Domonique Davis marked her final home game as a Lady Eagle with a 29-point performance for the short-handed Lady Eagles. Down to nine available players, Southern Miss gutted out its 68-58 win over Texas State thanks to an explosive 28-point fourth quarter. The win is the first for Southern Miss over Texas State and sixth-straight Sun Belt Conference win—the league's best current streak.
"I am so proud of our players to be able to get this win," said 20th-year head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "Texas State beat us three times last year; they beat us in the conference tournament, beat us at their place in overtime and beat us here. So again, they're really, really good. They lost some players from last year, but they've added some players. Dom got off to a bit of a slow start, but she became a gamechanger in the second half. This was her best game of her career in terms of leadership. All I can say about her is that it's been fun to watch her grow, not just on the court, but in every aspect of her life."
Southern Miss (15-10, 8-6 Sun Belt) stepped out to a 17-8 lead after one quarter of play thanks to Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) and Jacorriah Bracey's (Drew, Miss.) combined 15 points. The Lady Eagles were an effective 6-of-10 from the floor while holding Texas State to a 3-of-12 performance in the frame.
In the second quarter, Texas State surged back to win the frame 14-9, giving the Lady Eagles a 26-22 lead at the half. Grayson lead all scorers in the half with 10 points with Bracey and Domonique Davis (DeRidder, La.) trailing her with seven points each.
Texas State (13-14, 3-11 Sun Belt) continued to nip at Southern Miss' heels, tying the game at 40-all to end the third quarter. Davis grabbed her 17th point of the day with 8:53 left to play, giving the Lady Eagles their final lead of the day. She scored a total of 16 in the fourth quarter to reach 22 second half points.
Davis left the floor with under 10 seconds to play in her final regular season game as a Lady Eagle. The Lady Eagles' conference win streak moves to six-straight games. Southern Miss ends the season 12-3 at Reed Green Coliseum.
