HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Niko Mazza and Colby Allen combined to allow one unearned run as Southern Miss opened the Christian Ostrander era with a 4-1 victory over Marist Friday evening in front of a Pete Taylor Park opening-day record crowd of 5,272.
Mazza did not allow a run over 5 1/3 innings and gave up four hits with eight strikeouts to earn the victory. Mazza left in the sixth with a pair of runners on, but Allen came in to get of groundouts to end the threat.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage in the opening frame. After a pair of walks issued by Red Foxes starter Tyler Hartley, Slade Wilks ground into a double play. Nick Monistere then got hit by a pitch for the first of three times in the contest setting up a two-out triple for Ozzie Pratt. The BYU transfer belted one into the left-center field gap that clipped off the glove of Lewis Rodriguez allowing a pair of runs to score.
Carson Paetow extended the Golden Eagle lead to 3-0 in the second on a sacrifice fly in the second and complete the team's scoring with a double to short left in the fourth, which scored Matthew Russo, after he was hit by a pitch to open the frame.
The Red Foxes scored their lone run in the sixth. After a throwing error by Pratt to open the inning and a foul out, Danny Moshier singled, and Nathan Lincoln added a walk to load the bases. A fielder's choice by Colin Mackie accounted for Marist's run, before a strikeout ended the frame.
Allen then allowed singles the rest of the way as he fired the final 3 2/3 innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
Hartley gave up four runs on two hits with three walks, four hit by pitches and three strikeouts to suffer the loss.
The two teams continue with a 6 p.m. contest Saturday as part of Super Saturday on the Golden Eagle campus.
