
Lady Eagles Ride Defense to 57-46 Win Over Arkansas State

HATTIESBURG, Miss – Southern Miss held Arkansas State to 11 points in the second half and just two in the fourth quarter to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against the Red Wolves. Arkansas State's 46 points are the team's fewest in 23 games and worst mark in Sun Belt play since falling 61-36 against Southern Miss last year.
Jacorriah Bracey (Drew, Miss.) led all scorers on the day with 16 points on a 7-of-18 shooting performance and two free throws. Bracey scored 14 of her points in the second half, outscoring the Red Wolves by herself.
Southern Miss (14-10, 7-6 Sun Belt) opened up the day with a triple from Morgan Sieper (Tampa, Fla.) to strike first. The Lady Eagles' defense proved opportunistic in the first half, forcing 12 Arkansas State turnovers. In total, Southern Miss forced 24 Arkansas State giveaways – twice as many as the Red Wolves averaged entering today's game – the most forced turnovers since Southern Miss forced 27 against North Dakota earlier this year.
Arkansas State (13-11, 6-7 Sun Belt) took the lead late in the second quarter as Izzy Higginbottom hit five of six free throws awarded to the Red Wolves due to technical fouls. The Sun Belt's leading scorer, Higginbottom entered the day averaging 23.4 points per game and scored just 11 and only scored six points in actual competition.
The Lady Eagles came out of the locker room on fire, running out to a 9-0 start in the third quarter. Arkansas State scored only nine points in the quarter and went 3-of-13 from the floor in the frame. Bracey scored her fourth point of the game to take the lead 38-37 at the 8:44 mark in the third.
Heading to the final 10 minutes, Southern Miss led 49-46 and did nothing but suffocate the Red Wolves down the stretch. Southern Miss scored only eight points but held the Red Wolves to two points in the fourth quarter. All said, Arkansas State shot 4-of-23 (17.4 percent) from the floor in the second half, including 0-of-9 from three.
The Lady Eagles forced another 12 A-State turnovers to make their 24 on the day. Melyia Grayson (Hattiesburg, Miss.) grabbed 16 boards and put up 11 points for her 17th career double-double. The Hub City native is now tied with Brandy Reed for the ninth-most double-doubles in a Lady Eagle career.
