Crowley Records Third Consecutive Double-Double Thursday Night
2/15/2024 11:07:00 PM | Men's Basketball
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Austin Crowley became the first Southern Miss (14-12, 7-6 Sun Belt) player to record a double-double in three consecutve games in nearly 10 years. Despite the feat, men's basketball fell 68-59 to ULM (10-14, 5-6 Sun Belt) on Thursday night at Reed Green Coliseum.
Crowley's late-game heroics almost helped the Golden Eagles erase a 21-point deficit. With 1:27 left in the game, Crowley scored his eighth basket of the game and made it a one-point game. It was also the closest the Golden Eagles had gotten to the Warhawks since tip-off.
Though momentum was on Southern Miss' side after that basket, Crowley was whistled for his fifth foul and the game's leading scorer was sent to the bench. The Golden Eagles couldn't muster up anymore offense as ULM closed the game on an 8-0 run.
ULM scored nine of its first 13 points off turnovers as the Golden Eagles turned the ball over 18 times, including 10 times in the opening half. Southern Miss managed to cut it 12 at halftime after trailing by 21, then outscored the Warhawks over the final 20 minutes.
Tyreke Locure finished with 20 points for ULM and accounted for five of its seven three-pointers. Locure's hot hand showed on a couple of desperation triples that halted two Southern Miss scoring runs.
The Golden Eagles got a 12-point, eight-rebound game out of center Tegra Izay. Izay's performance gave him back-to-back games with at least 10 points for the first time in his career. Coming off being named Sun Belt Player of the Week, Victor Iwuakor went for seven points and nine rebounds.
Southern Miss shot 41 percent as a team and 20 percent from deep. ULM made five more field goals, but also shot 41 percent from the floor. The Golden Eagles now have 125 blocked shots on the season, good for ninth all-time in single-season history.
It was the first Sun Belt Conference loss at Reed Green Coliseum in Golden Eagle history and just the second loss in Hattiesburg dating back to the start of last season. They will get another crack at a home win on Saturday when Texas State comes to town for a 2:30 p.m. start on ESPN+.
