
Golden Eagles Knock Off Texas State Behind Curbelo's Career Day

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Andre Curbelo scored a career-high 24 points in his return to the Southern Miss lineup as the Golden Eagles (15-12, 8-6 Sun Belt) downed Texas State, 78-74, on Saturday afternoon in Hattiesburg.
The two teams traded baskets and lead changes the first six minutes of the second half, but the Golden Eagles' 13-4 run was a backbreaker for the Bobcats. Curbelo tied the game on a pair of free throws and then gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good on a jumper with 13 minutes to go.
Austin Crowley helped preserve the Golden Eagle advantage with a steady scoring streak that helped the guard finish with 19 points. Bryson Hall sealed the win with two free throws with 19 seconds left and gave the Golden Eagles their 14th Sun Belt win at Reed Green Coliseum.
Tegra Izay turned in nine points, six rebounds and three blocks before fouling out in the final minutes of the game. Jose Benitez came off the bench and provided four points in six minutes of action.
Southern Miss picked up its fifth win of the season when trailing at the half and 50 percent from the floor for the fourth time this season. The Golden Eagles only turned the ball over three times in the second half after doing so 10 times in the first 20 minutes.
The Golden Eagles now get ready to host South Alabama on Thursday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
