Lady Eagles Return to Sun Belt Play Against Arkansas State

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball returns to action under the Sun Belt banner after a quick trip to Buffalo for the MAC-SBC Challenge. The Lady Eagles' final homestand begins on Thursday, Feb. 15, at 5 p.m. against Arkansas State.

Southern Miss fell 62-46 at Buffalo as part of the second leg of the 2023-24 MAC-SBC Challenge. The Bulls shut down the Lady Eagles' offensive attack, holding the team to 30 percent from the floor and 2-of-21 from three. Buffalo's Rana Elhusseini recorded the school's third triple double in program history enroute to Buffalo's 16-point win.
ABOUT ARKANSAS STATE
The Red Wolves were picked to finish eighth in the Sun Belt preseason poll and are currently tied with Southern Miss at seventh with a 6-6 SBC record and 13-10 overall mark. Arkansas State is the conference's best three-point shooting team, knocking down shots from behind the arc at a rate of 33.4 percent. Arkansas State also plays clean basketball, turning the ball over just 12.8 times per game.
Izzy Higginbottom leads the group in scoring with 23.4 points per game. She is joined by Lauryn Pendleton and Anna Griffin who average 12.7 and 11.0 points per game, respectively. Wynter Rogers leads the group on the glass, bringing down 7.0 boards per game.
THE ARKANSAS STATE SERIES
Southern Miss' first game against Arkansas State came on Jan. 6, 1982, in Jonesboro. Southern Miss won that game as well as the next one in Hattiesburg that fall. However, the Dec. 10, 1982, game marked the first-ever game of the storied Lady Eagle Classic. The 1982 Classic opened with Southern Miss and Arkansas State.
The two met 17 years later in 1999-00 and 2000-01 with Arkansas State taking both games. Another 22 years passed before Southern Miss joined the Sun Belt and matched up against Arkansas State twice last year. Southern Miss swept the regular season 2-0 and earned their third win of the year and fifth overall against Arkansas State in the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
AFTER THIS
Southern Miss says goodbye to Reed Green Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 17, against Texas State. After taking on the Bobcats, Southern Miss spends the last two weeks of Sun Belt play on the road.
Tipoff between Southern Miss and Texas State is set for Noon at Reed Green Coliseum. The Lady Eagles will be looking for their first win over Texas State after falling three times to the program last year.
