TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After a long wait, the Southern Miss men's tennis team opened its season this afternoon in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The Golden Eagles fell 6-1 to UAB in a neutral court match.
"I am proud of the way the guys played today, especially after such a long wait to get the season started," said head coach Zubin Engineer. "This is only the beginning of the season and there is so much room to grow."
The Blazers took the doubles point by winning a pair of tight matches on court one and two. Henry Lamchinniah and Saheb Sodhi tried to fight off Carlos Gimenez Perez and Juan Pablo Valdez, but the UAB duo won 6-4. Dakotah Bobo and Shamirul Shahril fell 6-2 at the top spot. Olle Noltorp and Pasawee Reansuwong were tied 4-4 on court three but went unfinished.
Reansuwong picked up the lone Golden Eagle win by knocking off Iker Dellien, 7-5, 6-1. Other than Bobo's three-set loss on court one, UAB swept the rest of the singles matches.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Feb. 17 against Samford. The match is set for 2 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.
