BILOXI – Ole Miss (9-1, 0-0 SEC) made 13 three-pointers as the No. 19 Rebels shot their way to a 77-46 win over Southern Miss (4-6, 0-0 Sun Belt) on Saturday afternoon. The loss at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum was the Golden Eagles' second-straight after winning two consecutive games.
The difference in the game was Ole Miss' start to the second half. The Rebels hit a three-pointer right before the break to make it a 10-point ballgame as both teams went to the locker room. Out of the break, Ole Miss opened the second half on a 16-1 run that put it ahead by 25.
The Golden Eagles managed to answer back momentarily as Cobie Montgomery hit a three-pointer to start a 7-0 run – that made it an 18-point game. The Golden Eagle momentum was short-lived with Ole Miss going on another 16-4 run to build 31-point lead.
The first half was a heavyweight fight for the Golden Eagles, though. Southern Miss fell behind by 14 only seven minutes into the game. Christian Reid, who was the first Golden Eagle off the bench, provided a spark for Southern Miss as he helped dwindle the deficit down to seven.
Ole Miss then benefited from Sean Pedulla and Jaylen Murray's three-point shooting after the Golden Eagles played their way back into the game. The Virginia Tech and Saint Peter's transfers hit five triples over the final six minutes of the first half – subsequently, each came after Southern Miss cut the Ole Miss lead to seven. The dagger before half came when Murray came out of a timeout and hit a three-pointer to send the Rebels to the locker room up 10.
In the end, Ole Miss' 13 three-pointers were the most Southern Miss has allowed in a game this season. On the Golden Eagles' side, they hit four – the second-fewest in a game this season.
Denijay Harris finished with 16 points and seven rebounds to lead Southern Miss. Cobie Montgomery made three triples, while Harris had the other one for the Golden Eagles. Seven-footer Lieb Yat came off the bench in the final minutes to score a career-high seven points. Yat also grabbed three rebounds in the three minutes of action.
The Rebels finished the game shooting 45 percent from the floor and 41 percent from deep. The Golden Eagles shot 33 percent from the floor and 7 percent from three.
Southern Miss returns home for a two-game homestand before the holiday break. The Golden Eagles open with Lamar on Tuesday night at Reed Green Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
