Golden Eagles Fall at home to Marshall

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Ethan Payne rushed for a game-high 104 yards, which included a 36-yard touchdown run, as visiting Marshall defeated Southern Miss 37-3 Saturday afternoon at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
The loss dropped the Golden Eagles to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in Sun Belt Conference play, while the Thundering Herd got bowl eligible improving to 6-3, 4-1.
The meeting was the first between the schools since 2018 when they were both members of Conference USA. The victory for the visitors snapped a three-game losing streak to the Golden Eagles.
Marshall quarterback Braylon Braxton threw for 220 yards on 14-of-21 throws with a touchdown and an interception. Up 3-0 in the second quarter, Braxton also helped increase the Herd lead to 10-0 on a two-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.
After a 51-yard field goal from Connor Gibbs just over three minutes later cut the gap to 10-3, Marshall scored the next 27 points over the remainder of the contest..
Herd field goal kicker Nathan Totten converted three of five field goals, coming from 23, 27 and 26 yards to help in the visitor's scoring.
The Thundering Herd outgained the Golden Eagles 526-183 in total offensive yards.
Golden Eagle quarterback Ethan Crawford finished 5-of-18 for 70 yards and three interceptions.
Southern Miss returns to the road next Saturday when they play at Texas State. Game time is 6 p.m., from San Marcos, Texas.
